The overall goal of the basic education English course is to develop students’ comprehensive language proficiency. Language knowledge and language skills are the foundation of comprehensive language skills. Language skills include listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as the comprehensive use of these four skills. Listening and reading are skills of understanding, speaking and writing are skills of expression. Comprehension and expression skills occupy almost half of English teaching. The requirements of these two modules are very clear in the new curriculum standard. At the practical stage, students can read simple books and newspapers and magazines that are read by students in grades 7 to 9, overcome vocabulary barriers, and understand general ideas. Ability to use appropriate reading strategies based on reading purposes
