The genetic characteristics of wild-type measles virus (MeV) are based on the sequence analysis of two mutated sites of the viral genome, which are monitored and provide strong support for finding out the transmission path of measles. The molecular epidemiological study targets 450 nucleotides encoding 150 amino acids, including the entire protein-coding region of COOH-containing nucleoprotein and hemagglutinin genes. Based on these sequences, the genotype of the virus can be determined. Part of the 21 MeV genotypes recognized by the WHO are newcomers in the recent three years. The primary measles strain is the same genotype A as the strain currently used for measles vaccine. Author
