唐宋时代是中国封建社会的转型时代,政治经济制度及文化都发生了重大变化。急递制度也是如此。急递是中国古代邮传制度中的一种,以服务于军事为目的,主要传递各类紧急公文。唐以前,急递与其它官方公文都通过驿站来传递,并没有自己独立的机构与管理体系。宋以后,驿传分离,递铺以通信为主,兼顾押送犯人与运送物资,但急脚递铺则专一传送紧急公文。这一制度为金元所继承,遂使急递制度逐渐与传统驿传分离开来,单一传送公文的急递铺成为一个独立的通信机构。
