The United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Denver (Colorado) have developed a statistical model to predict wheat stripe rust. For five years scientists have used models to accurately predict the severity of winter wheat stripe rust across six western states. The model can also be used in spring-sown cereals and is believed to have global application value. The results were first achieved by monitoring the density of field rust occurring in eastern Washington state and Oregon, the most prevalent strip blight, and then comparing the data with monthly and quarterly temperature and precipitation (including snowfall and depth of snow) data. They find out the temperature
