美国的天空实验室自1973年5月发射以来,航宇局只进行过三次共171天的对接飞行。由于这个空间站没有象苏联礼炮号那样携带一种火箭发动机,使它能在寿命结束时按指令再入到指定的公海,所以航宇局担心,如果任其自然再入,那么这个重达75吨的庞然大物就有可能坠落在居民区。为此,自1976年秋以来就一直在研究如何复活天空实验室,以便再次使用它,或是避免坠入居民区的问题。天空实验室目前正以每五分钟大约一转的速度绕它的纵轴作慢滚
