赤豆又称红小豆,是南通市沿海旱作地区的传统作物,也是城乡人民喜爱的辅助食品,历史上曾是当地的名牌出口商品。赤豆的营养比较丰富,籽粒含蛋白质25%左右,可溶性糖3%左右,还有各类维生素和磷、铁等多种人体必须的元素。 赤豆的传统种植方法是春播,与春玉米同时播种,一般每2~3穴玉米间作一棵赤豆。玉米组合5.5~6尺,前茬蚕豆(麦子)收获后,再在玉米行间套种夏大豆,实行玉米,赤豆、大豆三夹种。这种种植方法,花工较多,管理不便,赤豆产量不高。为节省劳力,简化栽培,提高经济效益,我们试把间作春赤豆改为套种秋赤豆。
