Objective To analyze the correlation between CT perfusion parameters and tumor microvessel density (MVD) in rabbit VX2 soft tissue tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight New Zealand white rabbits were inoculated with VX2 tumors on bilateral rabbit thighs. CT perfusion examination was performed two weeks after inoculation. Unilateral (right) local bolus radiotherapy was performed. The left side served as the control group. A second CT perfusion examination was performed 7 to 8 days after radiotherapy. The tumor was removed and the MVD of tumor samples was calculated by Weidner’s technique. Results The average values of blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV) and surface permeability (PS) of tumors were higher than those of normal muscular tissues. After VX2 tumor radiotherapy, the tumor MVD decreased, BF, BV and PS values also decreased, the tumor BF, PS, BV and tumor MVD were positively correlated. Conclusion BF, BV and PS in rabbit VX2 tumor are closely related to tumor microvessel, which can be used as a surrogate marker of tumor angiogenic activity.
