水曲柳属落叶乔木,大树高达30米,胸径60厘米,是我省珍贵的用材树种之一。它材质略重硬,耐腐蚀,耐水性能好。易加工,韧性大,耐磨损。刨面光滑,花纹美丽,易胶接、涂添,是制作胶合板、家具、车船、运动器材等的良好材料。 水曲柳主根短,侧根发达,喜深厚、肥沃、湿润的土壤。能耐零下40℃严寒,但嫩梢不耐低温,易遭晚霜危害。在PH值8.4、含盐量0.1～0.15％的盐碱地上也能生长,但不耐水渍。水曲柳造林要选在山脚缓坡地的壤土上进行。沼泽地、碱地以及瘠薄、干旱、排水不良的地方都不宜栽植。
