The article traces the development of American engineering ethics over the past 30 years. Early engineering ethics focused on the ethical charter of engineering, which clearly identified the ethical obligations of engineers as chief creators and regulators of technology. Recent themes in engineering ethics are moving in a more positive direction beyond the simple protection of public health and safety from engineer error. Looking ahead, discussions about the good professional image and virtues of engineers will continue. Given the tremendous power of technology in the modern world and the presence of a large number of engineers, engineering ethics is expected to continue to grow and expand.
