薛绍徽在《满江红》的序中,记载了1884年中法马江之战中,当清政府南方的海军全军覆没后,以林狮狮为首,流亡海上与清官兵和外国侵略者对抗的渔民们英勇奋战反击法国入侵者,并击重法海军最高司令官——孤拔的英雄业绩,林狮狮等人也在这次海战壮烈牺牲。这是近代史上中国人民受尽列强侵略屈辱中很少有的扬眉吐气、振奋人心的一幕。可惜清史以及民国后的史书上对林狮狮等渔民的英雄业绩全无记载,薛绍徽的《满江红》词序具有较高的史料价值,填补了中法战争的历史空白。
