It has long been recognized that the immune system plays a leading role in the body’s defense against infectious diseases and may also have an important impact on the occurrence of tumors. However, the concept of using antibodies to alter physiological or pharmacological effects or as diagnostic tools has been recognized in recent years. With the understanding of the molecular structural chemistry of antibodies and the ability to produce antibody-producing cells, other methods than conventional immunization can now be used to select and produce purely antibodies and their fragments in large quantities. In this review, we summarize the potential use of antibodies in four aspects of human pharmacology: 1. the role of hormones that inhibit over-secretion; 2. the blockage of physiologic receptors; 3. the detection of newly-exposed antigens in living beings; And drug toxicity.
