在我国民族资本发展史上,民生实业股份有限公司作为一颗异军突起的新星,占有重要地位。 民生公司创立于1925年,正式营运于1926年。初创时期有股本八千余元。经过二十多年的经营,它不但在同帝国主义各国和本国轮船公司的激烈竞争中生存了下来,在长江航运中占据了举足轻重的地位,而且还冲破重重包围,由内河航运发展到海运。到解放前夕,民生公司已拥有轮船一百四十八艘,船舶总吨位五万一千余吨,航运区域达整个长江流域及沿海、日本以至东南亚各国;而业务范围则以轮船航运业为主,兼营机器制造、采煤、发电供水、纺织染布以至百货经销、外贸等行业,成为旧中国最大的民族资本主义航运企业。
