武谷三男是日本当代著名物理学家,也是一位自然辩证法大师.1911年10月2日武谷三男生于日本福冈县、后移居到我国的台湾省.在台北市读完小学和中学,1931年考入京都帝国大学理学院地球物理系,后转到物理系.自1932年起开始从事原子核物理与基本粒子物理的研究工作.1938年,武谷作为不拿工资的助手转入汤川研究室(汤川秀树是日本著名物理学家,曾因提出介子假说而获诺贝尔物理学奖).1935年武谷与同事们一起创办了进步刊物——《世界文化》,他利用这一刊物宣传反法西斯主义、主张民主与自由的进步思想,因而在1938年被捕,翌年获释.1941年武谷转入理化研究所仁科芳雄研究室,翌年与物理学家朝永振一郎共同组织介子研究会.1944年武谷再次被捕.战后,武谷积极参加反对核武器的运动,1952年他提出了和平利用原子能的三项原则——自主、民主、公开.1953~1969年在立教大学任教授,以后退休为客座讲师,至今一直在撰写著作,硕果累累,已发表的著作共20多部.
