《义务教育英语课程标准》中指出:基础教育阶段学生应该学习和掌握的英语语言基础知识包括语音、词汇、语法、功能和话题等五个方面的内容。词汇是与语法同等重要的语言知识。然而,就服务于交际目的而言,词汇甚至比语法更重要。正如英国语言学家Wilkins所说:“没有语法人们难以很好地表达,但是没有词汇,则什么也不能表达。”就考试而言,词汇不过关,单选题题干和选项读不懂,阅读一知半解甚至不知所云,就更不用谈对词汇要求更高的书面表达了。可以说,没有一定的词汇功底,听、说、读、写、译,哪一步都寸步难行。
