Until recently, flat panel display devices have been mainly used in small displays such as calculators and timepieces, and have now begun to compete with normal television and computer displays. According to International Resource Development Corporation (IRD), sales of flat panel displays will exceed 500 million U.S. dollars in the late 1980s, a 10-fold increase from 1981 total sales of about 50 million U.S. dollars. For a quick overview, Table I lists the manufacturers of various flat panel display devices.
