大家一定见到过在墙上涂鸦的街头艺术家，看到他们在墙上写字作画是不是会感觉他们很酷？本期要给大家介绍一个典故，the writing on the wall——见到典故里“墙上的字”可就不是一件很酷的事情咯！
“The writing on the wall”（或作 “the handwriting on the wall”，“the writing is on the wall”，亦可做 “the finger on the wall”）从字面意思上看，似乎是“写在墙上的字”或“墙上的手指”的意思。然而，这个短语实际的内涵意义与字面意义可差了不少呢！它的真正含义是：“imminent doom or misfortune” （厄运来临，大难临头）， “the future is predetermined”（既定的（坏的）未来）。
为什么“墙上的字”会有表示“厄运”的意思呢？一起来看看这个短语的出处来源吧！
《旧约 · 但以理书》（The Book of Daniel） 第五章记述：有一次古巴比伦 （Babylonian） 的国王伯沙撒（Belshazzar） 正在宫殿里设宴纵饮时，突然，不知从哪里出现了一个神秘的手指，当着国王的面，在王宫与灯台相对的粉墙上写西了四个奇怪的单词：
??? ，???， ???， ??????
Mene， Mene， Tekel， Parsin
Mene（弥尼）、Mene（弥尼）、Tekel（提客勒）、Parsin （乌法珥新）。国王惊恐万分，谁也不懂墙上所写的字是什么意思。后来叫来了被虏的犹太预言家但以理 （Daniel），才明白了这几个字的意思就是大难临头。他说：“弥尼就是上帝已经数算你国的年日到此为完毕；提客勒就是你被称在天平里显出你的亏欠；乌法珥新就是你的国分裂，归与玛代人和波斯人。”果然，当夜伯沙撒被杀，由62岁的玛代人大利乌取而代之。由此，“墙上的文字（或手指）”便有表示身死国亡的凶兆意义。
