On March 19, 2014, the International Energy Agency released the Energy Storage Technology Roadmap. The report states that energy storage technologies are of great value in most energy systems, but the maturity of different energy storage technologies is very different. Currently, some small-scale energy storage systems are cost-competitive in remote communities and off-grid applications, while large-scale thermal storage technologies are competitive in meeting the heating and cooling needs in many areas. The report predicts that the United States, Europe, China and India will need to invest at least 380 billion U.S. dollars to add 310 GW by 2050
