The use of antimicrobials in livestock husbandry has led to a rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and extensive research on humans, but few people know about the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in aquaculture. Pond-raising mullet, the main cultured aquaculture in the United States, is estimated to suffer an annual economic loss of less than 10% due to pathogen infection by Aeromanas hydrophila, also a human opportunistic pathogen. FDA has long approved the use of oxytetracycline to prevent catfish disease. To examine the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria following oxytetracycline, the authors studied: (1) the range of OTc-r and Tc-r present in Chloromonospora; (2) the Tc-r determinant (det-
