镇墓俑又称陶辟邪。辟邪为我国古代传说中的一种神兽。西汉史游撰《急就篇》中说:“射鬾、辟邪除群凶”。唐颜师古注:“射鬾、辟邪皆神兽名”,“辟邪言能辟御妖邪”为“除去凶灾而保卫其身也”。南朝陵墓前常有辟邪石雕像,亦有将辟邪作为明器——即墓中的随葬物的。鲁迅先生收藏的镇墓俑高36公分,系唐代物,为河南洛阳市北郊印山古墓中出土的
