[U.S. Nuclear News, pp. 60, October 1983] The world’s largest device for fuel melting accidents in simulated reactors has been put into use at the Sandia National Institute in the United States. The device was able to melt the 500-room UO2 and heat it to 2,700°C. The main component of the device is a 1,000 Hz, 250 kW induction furnace. The furnace is mounted on a high platform below which is a test chamber and associated automatic control and data collection devices. During the test, the depleted uranium dioxide powder is first melted and then added to simulate reactor fuel, cladding and fission products (such as non-radioactive materials of zirconia and yttria), and finally discharged into small groups quickly.
