《红楼梦》第五回所提示的这个小说之大结构,其本质乃是“爱者之死”的绝对悲剧。《红楼梦》对主人公“无能”角色的配置,其构型当肇于当时所流行的忆语体文学,乃是出自要将其作为传递追忆之具体细节的媒体的需要。《红楼梦》之对于与逝者一起生活过的点点滴滴的回忆的时空设定,很容易转化成一种生者追忆逝者之普世情怀。正是这种对蕴潜人类心灵深处的感情之精致描述,或可将其视为一部“忆语体小说”。
