WALO-Shun Ou, along with his colleagues at the National Institute of Materials and Chemistry, invented an optical micromachining process that produces engraved patterns on quartz glass using the photothermal energy conversion of pyrene, an organic dye molecule. The physical and chemical details of this mechanism are not yet fully understood, but researchers believe there is a repetitive light-to-heat transition between the two electron-excited states of pyrene. When the surface of the pyrene-covered glass is smooth and crack-free, this conversion produces a 3.5 μm deep pattern.
