扣器在一千多年前是家喻户晓的。但今天生活中,它早已不存在了,人们不知道它是什么东西,因此,要稍加解释。东汉许慎编的大字典《说文·金部》解释说:“扣,金饰器口。”古代所说的“金”,是泛指金属.如黄金、白银、铜等,都统称为金。许慎说,凡是用金属加固和装饰器物口沿的.就叫扣器。《后汉书.和熹邓皇后纪》记载:“其蜀汉扣器,九带佩刀,并不复调。”李贤注:“扣音口,以金银缘器也。”缘是边缘的缘,这里是作动词用,是说凡是用金银等金属来缘器的,就叫扣器。这两种解释,大同小异。但许慎是汉代人,他的解释是严谨的,也就是说,严格意义上的扣器,只限于用金属装饰器口的才是。李贤是唐代人,他对扣器的解释比较宽松,认为凡是用金属缘边的就是扣器。这是广义的扣器。从古代扣器的实际情况看,两种解释都说得通。
