Cornell University made a new type of laser from a thin wafer cut from a cigar-sized sodium chloride single crystal. The new laser is characterized by its ability to be tuned within 1.4 to 1.9 μm in the important infrared spectral region. It can produce a continuous beam and about 1.5ps ultrashort pulse,
