I am a fan of Russian literature, and some of my favorite literary young people from around the 50s have had such an experience. At that time, the policy of “one-sidedness” was learned from the Soviet Union. Almost all secondary school foreign languages are Russian. Many good English teachers switch to Russian and teach Russian so it is natural for students to read Russian novels, sing Russian songs, watch Soviet movies, and even make friends with Soviet students
