Objective To understand the success rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in elderly patients in ICU, the relationship between survival rate and underlying diseases, and the effect of age on the success of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on the history of elderly patients ≥60 years old who underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the emergency department ICU in our hospital from 1995 to 1999. Results A total of 153 patients in 5a experienced CPR with an average age of 49 years, of which 90 were elderly patients ≥60 years of age and 21 (21.3%) had CPR success but only 2 (2 2%) survived discharge. Conclusions Age among elderly patients is not the major factor influencing the success of initial cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the ICU. However, with age, the rate of survival and discharge was significantly decreased. Cardiovascular disease and infectious diseases, as well as respiratory diseases, are the major underlying diseases that stop heartbeat and respiratory arrest in elderly patients in the ICU
