唐代幽州与桂州行政位置相近,使得其城池营建格局具有可比性。在两城城池营建方式、格局外围建设等异同点的影响下,两城的营建格局也具有相似之处和独有的特点。一方面,两城均是军事重镇,其共同的营建选址和不同的子城位置都对其军事作用的发挥有重要影响;另一方面,两城营建的地理位置一定程度上使两城成为交通枢纽,但两城的主要交通方式和城市格局开放程度存在差别,这对两城日后交通的主要发展走势和城市性质转变产生影响。
