王鐸出身官宦世家,父王炎官至太常博士,伯父王播、叔父王起皆官至宰相。鐸歷官武宗、宣宗、懿宗、僖宗四朝,在官44年,屢掌兵柄,三登相位。與杜牧、白敏中、李郢、盧肇、薛逢、李頻、蕭遘、高駢、羅隱等人多有往來或唱和。鐸本世貴,加之其位高權重,故而厚於奉養,後竟因之爲奸人所害。其生平事蹟,主要見於兩《唐書》及《資治通鑒》《册府元龜》《唐詩紀事》《全唐詩》《全唐文》等,然所記多簡略,於其歷官年代、仕宦行跡或語焉不詳,或尚存舛誤。兹稽考史記,于其任官年代逐一考求,並繫之以生平行實。
