五安源地处萍乡东南腹地,萍乡城西虽有河流码头,水运通往湖南,但距安源十四华里。而城东卢溪河流通江西袁水,又离安源五十华里左右。所以,光绪二十四年(1898年)萍乡煤矿在安源创办后,铁路总公司督办(兼督汉冶萍事务)盛宣怀,就陆续奏准清庭政府修筑萍昭铁路,后改称株萍铁路。萍安铁路(安源至萍乡城西宋家坊水次)是株萍铁路的首段,同年十二月,即1899年1月正式动工,由
