平潭是我国第四大海岛。从地图上看,它又是距福州最近的岛屿。半个多世纪以来,我曾先后三次登上了这块海上宝地,三次都有不同的感受。第一次是在福州解放后不久。历经半个世纪的风雨人生,许多事情俱已淡忘,惟有在海边等待过渡的情景记忆犹新。那时的轮渡设备落后,到平潭岛要很长的时间。岛上居民生活困难,当地有这样的顺口溜:“平潭岛,平潭岛,风沙大,耕地少,男的多,女的少,一年到头吃地瓜,没有良田种水稻。”老乡们告诉我,岛上天然景观不少,但是当时没有旅游之说,谁也不敢借公差机会
