Zeolite HZSM-5 calcined at different temperatures have been studied as catalyst for the esteritication of acetic acid with ethanol and namyl alcohol. The acidity on the surface of HZSM-5 has been determined by the method of cation-exchange. The correlations between acidity data of ZSM-5 Which were determined by the method of cation-exchange. NH3-TPD and IR. respectively, have been discussed. From the results obtained. it can be concluded that the esterification reactions are carried out only on Bronsted acid sites which have suitable acid strength. The dehydration of alcohols can take place both at Bronsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites.
