F_1 (hybrid) hybrids have conducted some experiments to determine the possibility of F_1 hybrid development in flue-cured tobacco, but the results are not beneficial. In one experiment, using eight cultivars to compose all the possible crosses, the F_1 hybrids showed only slightly better than the average of the two (parental) varieties but not superior to the best of the combinations. In some crosses, F1 is only superior to the average of parental varieties in terms of yield and plant height. Only one of the 252 combinations F_1 is superior to any of the characteristics of the parent. Due to the need for artificial pollination, F_1’s high cost of seeds and relatively low increase of F_1 over its parental variety make it impractical to use this technique in flue-cured tobacco production.
