机械零件加工传统地分成两类:一类是以汽车制造自动生产线为典型的大量生产;另一类是以加工中心为典型的小批量或单件生产;而FMS则介于两者之间,称为“中量”生产,其年产量约为2万件至20万件。在此范围内,产品混合及生产成本的不确定性最大,而恰恰在此范围内,用计算机控制减少对转换不同零件的成本,效果最显著,FMS由此应运而生。
