实用根艺集装饰与实用于一体,自古以来就受到人们的重视和喜爱。据资料考查,最早始于何时不明,但以明清两代最盛,在诸多古书中均有插图和文字描述。实用根艺多以桌、椅、凳、床、几架、台灯、拐杖等形状出现。由于它具有艺术观赏、装饰和实用价值的多重性,同时也具有较高的商品价值,故在实际创作和制作中,较大作品多是用小块根料拼接而成,整块根料和少拼接的精品较为少见。在色彩方面以深色为主,其目的是遮盖拼接处和木质色彩的不统一,亦可遮掩瑕疵,总体虽显得古香古色,却缺乏时代色彩。笔者喜爱根艺创作已久,我1964年制作的根艺台灯至今仍可使用。据多年的经验认为:实用根艺的创作关健是因材施艺,创意灵活多变也是不可少的。其次是外型设计的取舍、加工力度和色彩配置等。下面仅举二例说明:如图4,宫灯架,原意是想作一件龙头拐杖,但上部太大,做出来会有头重脚轻的感觉,很不协调。后偶尔想到用来作古代的宫灯架效果会不错,于是配上脚和电线即成现状。另两件作品抽象型几架的原
