Japan’s auto exports have increased from thousands in the late 1950s to more than 3 million in 1979. This amazing rapid development has led the Japanese to establish a premier overseas sales network. Today, the Japanese auto industry, which has an annual output value of US$40 billion, is the world’s largest auto exporter. The total output is second only to the United States (has surpassed the United States in the first half of 1980). However, the Japanese automobile industry giant still worries deeply into the eighties. They are fiercely competing with Detroit automakers to step up production of smaller cars to meet American consumer demand for energy-saving ultra-compact cars. Japan’s successful entry into foreign markets has stimulated the protection of trade sentiment, especially in the United States.
