根据患者的紧急性、轻重程度不同,急救医疗可分为Ⅰ~Ⅲ级。第Ⅰ级急救医疗是对轻症患者的初诊,一般由普通诊疗所承担,第Ⅱ级急救医疗虽然治疗的对象为中等程度的急救患者,但需短期住院治疗。第Ⅲ级急救治疗是把有生命危险的患者作为治疗对象,除此之外尚有处理特殊疾病(心脏循环系统等)的特殊治疗设施。现在在日本第Ⅲ级急救治疗,被称为急救医疗中心,共有13个设施。急救药品也根据从第Ⅰ到第Ⅲ以及在特殊诊疗设施处理患者的急救程度、设备、体制的不同有所不同。
