In the desert of Atacama in northern Chile, the Escondida copper mine at 3050 meters above sea level is the latest large-scale copper mine to be built and is owned by Chile’s Consolidida Mining Company Limited. It shipped the first batch of copper concentrate on the last day of 1990, seven months earlier than planned. After two years of geological mapping of this deposit, copper reserves have not yet been disclosed after sampling, analysis and drilling. In the early 1980s, a US geologic team had determined that there were 600 million tons of copper in the area like the lunar surface landscape. Escondida deposit 3,000 meters long, 1,000 meters wide, the average grade of 2.5% ore, there
