March 1995 The United States Food and Drug Administration approved live attenuated varicella vaccine for individuals over 12 months of age who have not had chickenpox. This article describes recommendations for use of the chickenpox vaccine by the American Academy of Pediatrics in children, including indications, contraindications and precautions.
