Earlier results from Veterans Diabetes Research showed that strict control of blood glucose in 1791 veterans (median follow-up, 5.6 years) did not reduce major cardiovascular events compared with standard hypoglycemic therapy. All patients in this cohort were further followed in this study using the central database, including treatment course, hospitalization and death. Most patients agree to collect follow-up data through annual surveys and periodic questionnaires. The primary endpoint was the time of the first cardiovascular event (acute episode of coronary heart disease, stroke, new or worsening congestive heart failure, amputation or cardiovascular related death from gangrene). Secondary endpoints were cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality. Glycated hemoglobin levels in the intensive and standard treatment groups during the study period
