Transforming research generally refers to the application of basic scientific findings to the treatment or prevention of disease or injury, the value of which is often based on the exploration or development of the possibility of producing effective therapies. Today’s pharmaceutical industry has evolved into a highly specialized industry that is engaged in transformational research, and is equally accepted by medical research teams at the initiative and motivation of the NIH. The establishment of a clinical and transformational research award can create opportunities for engaging in the multidisciplinary environment needed for such research institutions. One of the key components of the Clinical and Translational Research Award, as well as the NIH’s Roadmap for Work and the FDA’s Critical Pathway Program, is bridging foundational and clinical science through quantitative pharmacology. The University of Pennsylvania / Philadelphia Children’s Hospital clinical and transformational studies are relatively prominent, two research and education goals are dependent on quantitative pharmacology. A case study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to explore the use of neurokinin 1 receptor antagonism in the treatment of neurological AIDS is an example of the use of quantitative pharmacology for translational studies.
