1961年3月14日,中央军委决定:陆军第十五军改建为空降兵,番号是中国人民解放军空降兵第十五军。 军长赵兰田、政委廖冠贤面对前来接收的空军司令员刘亚楼有些不解:“全国那么多部队,为什么选我们十五军改建?”刘司令员和蔼地说:“这次改建也是经过挑选和比较的。十五军是个能打仗的部队,你们在上甘岭打出了国威,不仅在中国,而且在全世界都知道有个十五军。做了比较后,军委就定下来了。你们改建后,十五军番号就不改了,就叫空降兵第十五军。十五军负有为中国人民解放军建立新兵种的历史使命。” 创建空降兵种,中央军委选定了能打仗的十五军。那么它都打过哪些好仗呢?我曾在北京宣武区的一座小院中,访问过已故十五军首任军长、后任国防部长的秦基伟上将,并从将军那里得到了一本《第十五军军史》。从而,领略了这支部队的辉煌历程。
