Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional bowel disease characterized by changes in abdominal pain or abdominal discomfort and bowel habits, lacking the basis for morphological and laboratory abnormalities. IBS is a common disease that affects 10% to 20% of the population. Some estimate that almost all people have had IBS over their lifetime. The disease is the second most serious after the common cold
