相传古时候有个叫姜嫄的女子,她是个心地善良、爱好劳动的人。她已经三、四十岁了,还没有儿女,所以生活很孤单。这年春天,燕子来了的时候,她就带了很多的祭品到郊外去,向天神祷告,希望天神能够给她一个儿子。她默默地、虔诚地举行了祭礼以后,便往回走。回来的路上,在矮树丛间,她看到一只大燕子,飞飞停停,喃喃地叫着,后面跟着一只小燕子,一会儿飞在大燕子前边,一会儿飞在大燕子后边。
