提起裘盛戎,熟悉、热爱裘派艺术的人们必然想起他的琴师汪本贞。裘盛戎生前说过:“本贞的两只手,我是爱不够,离不开的。”是的,裘盛戎的演唱雄浑、苍劲、含蓄、细腻,为花脸演唱艺术开出新生面,此中,离不开汪本贞长达二十余年的得力辅佐。如果说,在裘之前,为花脸伴奏的琴师的个人独特风格不甚突出,一般化的居多,那么,汪本贞的伴奏已经形成了绵密流畅、色彩绚烂的净行独特的演奏技巧。现在花脸的伴奏,多取法于汪,可见影响之深。汪本贞幼年从张春芳学净,艺名汪源奎,后因“倒仓”,遂拜张崇轔改习文场胡琴。后又多方请益,汲取赵济羹、杨宝忠、贾贤英等名家的演奏技巧。三十年代开始,汪本贞曾为李世芳、李香匀、奚啸伯、白玉薇、王和霖、徐东明、周啸天等诸多生、旦名家伴奏,至五十年代,开始同裘盛戎合作,致力于裘派伴奏技巧的艺术探索,直至一九七七年逝世。
