俄罗斯历史上最大的一所美术高等学府一列宾绘画、雕塑、建筑学院创建于1757年俄都圣·彼得堡.该校创立伊始即把坚实系统的教学作为培养学生的任务和宗旨。从遗留下来的档案资料判明,该院培养美术人材是从小抓起的。1764年起在学院内建立培育专科学校。从五、六岁的孩子招起,每三年招进一批,这样按年岁分班,一直招到十五岁,也就是说共分为相差三岁的不同年龄的五个班。最初的第一班只学习素描和共同文化课,到了第四班开始分别进入绘画、雕塑、建筑等专业学习,但素描仍是所有造型课目中首要的课程。该校第一任校长苏瓦洛夫写道:“为了繁荣艺术,就必须打下坚实可信的素描基础,在各种高尚艺术中没有素描就不可能得到你想要得到的东西.”
