Formerly, mass spectrometry was the domain of chemists in their white coats and their own secret language. Concepts such as ion trap, post-source degradation, mass-to-charge ratio, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) make this field a mystery. Today, this technology has come out of the narrow limits into the biological laboratory, has become the basis of proteomics and biomarker research. In addition, you can see the mass spectrometer at airports and in warehouses, even deep inside the sea. In many cases these instruments are not used by specially trained researchers, but rather by representatives of transport security authorities, military and emergency personnel. This is entirely due to miniaturization. Researchers finally found how to streamline desktop systems into portable systems, and even hand-held devices. Therefore, the equipment they produce is not only for their own use, but also for the benefit of the world.
