费翔的本名为KRIS PHILIPS,所以“费”这个姓是从“菲利浦”音译而来——费翔,取其“飞翔”之意。 1981年,费翔被张文嘉发掘,参加了台视单元剧《十一个女人的演出》,因而进入演艺圈,当年他才20岁。隔年,费翔在台湾推出了他的第一张专辑《流连》。由于费翔外型俊美、歌声迷人,他在出道后立即成为台湾歌坛红极一时的偶像。1987年,费翔在央视春节晚会以《故乡的云》、《一把火》两首歌红遍大江南北。此后他告别中国流行乐坛,去纽约寻求音乐剧和舞台剧的发展。
