绅士作为中国封建伦理纲常的卫道士,是封建时代统治阶级与民间百姓联系的重要纽带,在封建时代的行政运作中起着十分重要的作用。作为封疆大吏、治世能臣的张之洞,督鄂政绩是其人生的辉煌之点。张氏督鄂时期,湖北绅士在兴办教育、接受新知、提携后进等的种种表现,体现出该社会阶层在促兴湖北近代教育的改革和发展方面,有着不可忽视的作用。
