The Russian economy started to decline from 1990 onwards, having dropped for seven consecutive years in 1996, with a 53% decline in gross domestic product (GDP) and a 9% annual decline rate. In the first half of 1997, GDP remained a slight decline (-0.2%). There was a downward trend from July to August. Officials are optimistic. Russian economy in 1997 may reach the bottom and turn up.
