There are approximately one elderly person out of 9 in the United States. In 1978, the elderly aged over 65 accounted for 11% of the total population. However, the number of patients in this group accounted for 16% of the total number of visits (1980), hospitalization - 24%, and 36% of hospitalization days for short-term hospital stays, and they were in long-term healthcare institutions. 86% of hospitalized patients were elderly (1981). Of the US spending on personal health care in 1978, 29% (US$37,744 million) was spent on health care for people over the age of 65, of which 2/3 were for hospitals and long-term care institutions. In addition to dental treatment, older people are more likely than younger people to see a doctor, or to be hospitalized and have long-term care. The reasons for this result are not only due to age but also because the elderly suffer from chronic diseases.
